Tulane University

Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Mykel Green is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University and the Director of
the Regenerative Engineering and Equity Lab. His research focuses on characterizing bone pathology in sickle
cell disease and developing innovative biomaterial-based strategies to improve hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)
transplantation. By leveraging engineered in vitro and in vivo models, his lab explores how pathology, sex, and
age influence HSC function to design biomaterials that enhance stem cell engraftment and recovery. The lab’s
ultimate goal is to create more effective, accessible, and equitable therapies for disorders reliant on HSC
transplantation.
Dr. Green is a proud alumnus of Morehouse College, where he earned his degree in Biology, and he holds a
Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from The City College of New York. In addition to his research, he is
dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. He serves as an active leader in organizations
such as BlackInBME and the Society for Biomaterials, where he works to empower marginalized communities
and increase their participation in biomedical engineering.
Outside the lab, Dr. Green is passionate about integrating healthcare equity into engineering education. He
develops curricula that combine advanced technical training with human-centered approaches, fostering
socially conscious engineers prepared to address complex healthcare challenges.
